Mermaids were my favourite topic since young. From mermaid cartoons to series, and till today, I am in the midst of doing a research whether mermaids are real or all those stories are just a hoax.
Mermaids are legendary aquatic creature and have appeared in the folklore in many cultures worldwide.
With the upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish, the mermaid tail goes back to its first story in the ancient Assyria. The tale tells the story of the goddess Atargatis who transformed herself into a mermaid out of shame for accidentally killing her human lover. In other folk traditions, mermaids can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans, or mostly known to events associated with floods, storms, shipwrecks and drowning.
Some historical sightings by sailors may have been misunderstood. Christopher Columbus reported seeing mermaids and sightings have been reported in the 20th and 21st century in Canada, Israel and Zimbabwe. To crack in another finding, mermaid Syrena in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strangers Tides. Hahaha! Hence, The National Ocean Service had stated in 2012 that no evidence of mermaids has been found.
The questions that were pondering in my head for years faded till recently my interest on mermaids returned after a video gone viral on social media on the sighting of a mermaid in Kiryat Yam, Israel recently. The Mayor Shmuel Siso has offered $1,000,000 for the individual or group who are able to capture the mermaid.
In a few documentary video, I came across one that got me glued. Not even my eyeball moved. “Animal Planet’s Mermaids The New Evidence 2013 Full” reveals the unsolved mystery of the mermaid legend. Many sightings and with social media, you could get tune into so many leanings and I saw few videos that revealed the existence of this creature. What amazed me were the faces. I was told that mermaids had long hair and are beautiful, but the picture by P.T. Barnum in 1965 on his Fiji mermaid, it was never describer in the same manner. The same creature was found in 1997 by Biologist Dr. Paul Robertson who also brought attention to the world via his “Mermaids: The Body Found” Documentary. He also believes that mermaids are not creature but part of the human family tree based on the Aquatic Ape Theory.
In recent findings, mermaids were heard and caught on film deep in the ocean off the coast of Greenland on March 6 2013, by marine geologist Dr. Torsten Schmidt. But they experience were the bloop which after their camera caught the image of the creature.
So many theories, so many videos going viral via social media, but the question continues to hunt my mind…Are mermaids real even though scientist have found evidence?
